Frequently Asked Questions

ABPhysCode is an assistive billing decision support tool for Alberta physicians and authorized billing professionals.

How accurate are ABPhysCode recommendations?

ABPhysCode provides AI-assisted billing suggestions based on structured Alberta billing logic and contextual interpretation of your de-identified input. It is designed to improve speed and consistency, but outputs may be incomplete or incorrect in complex cases. Final billing decisions must be verified against current official references and your documentation.

What billing codes does ABPhysCode cover?

ABPhysCode covers 2,403 Alberta SOMB billing codes across 19 specialties, including modifiers, governing rules (GR 1-18), GR 6.9.7 multi-procedure adjustments, and companion code relationships.

Which specialties does ABPhysCode support?

Current coverage includes Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, Psychiatry, Anaesthesia, Orthopaedics, Urology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Neurology, Paediatrics, Plastic Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Neurosurgery, Thoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and General Practice.

What are recommendations anchored to?

Recommendations are generated using Alberta-focused billing structure (codes, rule relationships, exclusions, and modifier context). ABPhysCode is a decision-support layer, not an official adjudication system. Always confirm final choices against current authoritative sources.

Does ABPhysCode reduce audit risk?

ABPhysCode can help by surfacing caveats, exclusions, and documentation prompts that are often missed. It does not eliminate audit risk and does not guarantee outcomes. Audit defensibility still depends on physician judgment and chart quality.

What are the limitations?

How should I handle privacy when using AI input?

Use de-identified text only. Do not include patient identifiers (name, PHN, full DOB, address, phone, email). ABPhysCode is designed for privacy-conscious workflows and data minimization.

Is this PHIA/PIPEDA compliant?

ABPhysCode is designed to support privacy-conscious use and data minimization. Users remain responsible for their own legal and professional obligations under PHIA, PIPEDA, and applicable standards in their practice setting.

Is ABPhysCode affiliated with AMA or Alberta Health?

No. ABPhysCode is an independent product by Alberta Coding Company Inc. It is not affiliated with AMA, AHS, or Alberta Health. Always verify recommendations against official references.

Does this replace AMA Fee Navigator or official references?

No. ABPhysCode does not replace official sources. It helps you move faster with structured suggestions and caveats; official references remain the source of truth.

Does this replace physician judgment?

No. ABPhysCode is assistive decision support only. Final billing decisions and claim submission remain with the physician and/or authorized billing professional.

What is the best way to use recommendations safely?

  1. Enter de-identified encounter details
  2. Review suggested codes, modifiers, and caveats
  3. Verify against current official references
  4. Ensure chart documentation supports selection
  5. Submit only what you can defend clinically and administratively
